The Beyond 20/20 Evaluation goes beyond the standard eye exam. Our evaluation can take between 1-5 hours spanning 1-3 visits to the office.  Our goal is to investigate the entire visual system to best develop a treatment plan for your specific visual needs.

The First Step: A Thorough Evaluation

The initial evaluation is very thorough.  It involves in-depth testing to make sure the eyes are healthy and free of disease, determine if glasses, prism, or colored tints are needed; and, most importantly investigate how well the two eyes work together.

Visual Information Processing Evaluation

Many people don't realize that our eyes are part of the brain. As a result, when visual information is taken in by our eyes, it is sent throughout the brain to interpret and understand what we are looking at. The Visual Information Processing evaluation determines how the visual system processes information, how vision integrates with the other sense modalities, and determines whether vision is supporting or interfering with performance to full potential.

Additional testing maybe required to further investigate your visual health and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

The RightEye is a non-invasive eye-tracking technology that tests, records, analyzes, and reports minute eye movement patterns vital to reading and academic performance.

Primitive Reflexes

Primitive reflexes are the first building blocks of movement.  They help establish the pathways for responses that later emerge as integrated motor control. When they are retained or fail to become fully integrated, they interfere with optimal visual development.

The Neurolens is a non-invasive test that measures the alignment of your eyes when reading or using the computer as well as when you are driving.  It allows us to determine if you have a misalignment in your vision affecting your everyday visual needs.

Functional Visual Fields

Functional visual fields testing is an examination of the sensory pathways of vision.  It allows us to determine the effectivity and success of Syntonics phototherapy.

Heart Rate Variability

The Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is designed to analyze the human heart and brain rhythms. It allows us to see subtle changes in the central nervous system influenced by internal and external factors such as concussion/brain injury and academic or work-related stress.  It also allows us to determine the effectiveness of treatment.

The Senaptec Sensory Station assesses ten visual and sensorimotor skills vital to sports performance.

Visual Evoked Potential

Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) objectively measures how well the entire visual system is working.  VEP uses visual stimuli to elicit an electrical response from your retina.  The electrical energy is then sent to your visual cortex.  VEP is similar to EKG, but for your visual system.

The Final Step:  Consultation

Once all of the testing has been completed, a separate appointment is scheduled with Dr. Patel where she will speak with the child's parents or the adult patient to get a better understanding of how the vision problem is impacting the individual's life. The doctor then combines this information with the results of the testing to design a unique treatment plan to ensure visual success.
